BHRV NHS Trust looking at implications of new motorway link with Prospex GIS
Blackburn, Hyndburn & Ribble Valley Healthcare NHS Trust have been looking into the implications of a new motorway link on their services. A new section of the M65 linking Burnley with Chorley passes right by the Queens Park Hospital entrance offering new opportunities for the Trust. Beacon Dodsworth modelled the new link before it was opened allowing the Trust to look at future drive times and the implications of the road.

There are two reasons for analysing the impact of the road. Firstly to explore whether the Trust, which has two main sites in Blackburn, would be more efficient operating from a single site. And secondly to examine whether the new motorway would offer easier access to the Trust's hospitals for a wider catchment population.

The Information Department has been analysing 15 and 30 minute drive times from both the Queens Park Hospital and Blackburn Royal Infirmary sites using Prospex. They now plan a more detailed mapping at individual clinical specialty level using the Trust's own activity data. These profiles will be used as a benchmark to examine any variations over time resulting from the new motorway.

Prospex' ability to import data from other datasources and use this to create catchment areas is the means by which this invaluable exercise will be achieved. The drive time functionality is also being used to the full.
