The North West Public Health Observatory (NWPHO) have released the comprehensive study of health inequalities in the North West of England, which was undertaken with the help of Beacon Dodsworths people classification, P People & Places. The study, Where Wealth means Health: Illustrating Inequality in the North West, gives an insight into the populations health in relation to measures of deprivation, health and social conditions.
Beacon Dodsworth provided NWPHO with the P People & Places geodemographic people classification at super output area for the study to be undertaken. Super output areas contain around 650 households on average and are being used to measure the effectiveness of government policy.
Using P2 People & Places as a classifier means that each area is readily identifiable by its characteristics indeed, the names of the Trees and Branches that make up the classification give real clues as to the types of people they correspond to. P People & Places is also affluence ranked, and so could be used in a similar way to the deprivation rankings, but include much more than just information on affluence. The reports conclusions include:
Diabetes is a disproportionate problem in areas classified as Multicultural Centres (which have higher proportions of ethnic populations);
Alcohol is a major threat to health in Urban Challenge (poor inner city areas) and New Starter areas (where students and qualified young adults are likely to live; and
Barriers to housing are especially problematic in Blossoming Family areas (where couple with young children live).
P People & Places is currently being offered free of charge to all NHS bodies, at super output area level, so that health inequalities such as those highlighted in the NWPHO report can be discovered, and hopefully remedied. This report shows how a geodemographic people classification can be used to help with health needs assessment.
P People & Places has a dedicated website, where the classification can be tested, by entering postcodes. This can be found at www.p2peopleandplaces.co.uk.
